Custom firmware installation via modifiable AppUpgrade
Published Apr 27, 2023 · Updated Jan 31, 2025
Incorrect authorization in Hyundai Gen5W_L AE_E_PE_EUR.S5W_L001.001.211214 allows local users to install custom firmware. The firmware installer trusts a modifiable AppUpgrade binary to perform the version check, letting altered code approve newer, older, or customized images. Low-privilege local access to modify AppUpgrade is required, and successful exploitation replaces the IVI software image with attacker-controlled firmware.
