Firmware-key disclosure via retained printf routine
Published Apr 27, 2023 · Updated Jan 31, 2025
Information disclosure in Hyundai Gen5W_L firmware AE_E_PE_EUR.S5W_L001.001.211214 allows local users to recover encryption secrets. DecryptToPIPE statically links an unused mbedtls_printf routine; a patched copy can pass register or stack values to it and print key material from memory. Local access to the firmware image and binary modification is required; the recovered AES-CBC key and derived IVs enable encrypted custom firmware for later USB installation.
