Service interruption via unchecked __proto__ path traversal
Published Jun 10, 2023 · Updated Jan 6, 2025
Prototype pollution in Mick Hansen dottie before 2.0.4 allows remote attackers to interrupt service through a crafted property path. The set() function splits an attacker-controlled dot path, traverses proto, and assigns a property on Object.prototype. Reachability requires a consuming application to pass an untrusted path to set(); inherited polluted properties can trigger exceptions and interrupt that service.
