SYSTEM privilege escalation via MSI repair console
Published Jul 24, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Privilege escalation in Atera Agent before 1.8.4.9 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through an MSI repair operation. The cached Windows Installer package lets an unprivileged user start a repair that opens temporary Command Prompt windows in a SYSTEM context. The attacker must use the interface to freeze a console window, follow a Properties hyperlink, and launch a browser with SYSTEM rights.
