SYSTEM privilege escalation via repair DLL hijacking
Published Jul 24, 2023 · Updated Oct 24, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Atera Agent 1.8.3.6 and earlier on Windows allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM via MSI repair. The repair action runs AgentPackageUpgradeAgent.exe as SYSTEM from a standard-user-writable temporary directory and loads missing DLLs there. Local users can plant a DLL such as CRYPTSP.dll and trigger the cached MSI repair to obtain SYSTEM privileges.
