Code execution via unvalidated system-call strings
Published Apr 10, 2023 · Updated Feb 11, 2025
Command injection in Lexmark device firmware 081.232 and earlier allows attackers to execute arbitrary code through unvalidated system calls. The _WriteTarFile method passes a user-supplied string to a system call and runs it as root; fax_change_faxtrace_settings similarly invokes a system call without validating input. The first path requires prior low-privileged compromise, while the fax-script path is network-adjacent and unauthenticated, with code running as httpd.
