SYSTEM privilege escalation via repair file redirection
Published Feb 8, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
Privilege escalation in Caphyon Advanced Installer 20.0 and earlier allows local users to gain SYSTEM access through MSI repair. The SYSTEM-level repair process creates a temporary file in a user-writable location, letting opportunistic locks and symbolic links redirect operations toward critical system files. A local unprivileged account must trigger repair and manipulate the file; exploitation permits replacement or removal of system components and full SYSTEM control.
