Root privilege escalation via updater archive race
Published May 16, 2023 · Updated Jan 23, 2025
Race condition in Groupnotes Videostream for macOS 0.4.3 and 0.5.0 allows local users to gain root privileges through its updater. The root LaunchDaemon downloads an archive into a predictable, user-precreatable path under /tmp, then extracts a raced replacement archive over the filesystem. A low-privileged local account must win the manifest and archive races during the five-hour or boot-time update run; a crafted archive can overwrite system files and install root-executed code.
