CVE-2023-24936Network attack vector

Privilege escalation via XML deserialization bypass

Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 1, 2025

XML deserialization in Microsoft .NET, .NET Framework, PowerShell, and Visual Studio allows remote attackers to elevate privileges. The DataSet and DataTable XML deserializers honor an extended type allow-list in a way that lets crafted XML bypass intended restrictions. Exploitation requires user interaction and an application or administrator to add specific triggering types to the default allow-list; default configuration is not susceptible.
