User-assisted code execution via resource DLL hijacking
Published May 9, 2023 · Updated Jul 10, 2025
Remote code execution in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Client allows attackers to run code when a user opens a crafted RDP file. On Windows on ARM, mstsc.exe loads fxsresm.dll from the RDP file's directory as a resource, then processes attacker-controlled format strings as printf-style data. A user must open the file; Microsoft lists x86, x64, and ARM64 releases as affected, although the disclosed reproduction succeeded only on ARM.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
