CVE-2023-24893

Code execution via replaced terminal command

Published Apr 11, 2023 · Updated Jan 23, 2025

Improper input validation in Visual Studio Code before 1.77.0 allows local users to execute code through terminal command reruns. The integrated terminal accepts shell-integration escape sequences that replace a stored command, and DecorationAddon reran the substituted text without displaying it for approval. Exploitation requires a user to select Rerun Command for the poisoned history entry, after which the replacement executes with that user's privileges.
