CVE-2023-24671Public exploit

Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path

Published Mar 16, 2023 · Updated Feb 26, 2025

Unquoted service paths in VX Search 13.8 and 14.7 allow local users to execute arbitrary commands with elevated privileges. The Windows service registration stores its executable path without surrounding quotation marks, allowing Windows to resolve a planted executable from an earlier whitespace-delimited path component. A local user able to plant that executable and trigger a service start gains the service account's privileges, affecting data and service operation.
