Process crash via recursive FitsOutput close
Published Mar 30, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Uncontrolled recursion in OpenImageIO 2.4.7.1 allows remote attackers to crash an application via a crafted ImageOutput object. FitsOutput::close() flushes buffered tiled FITS pixels through write_scanlines(); an excessive scanline calls close() again, recursing until stack exhaustion. Exploitation requires an application to construct and close the attacker-influenced FITS output object, and the consequence is a process crash.
