Arbitrary code execution via malicious dependency installation
Published Feb 22, 2023 · Updated Mar 13, 2025
Hidden functionality in Zeta Components MvcTools commit 6d48cd6 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code during dependency installation. MvcTools/design/requirements.txt declares the malicious Python request package, whose setup.py downloads and executes obfuscated code from a command-and-control server. Exposure requires resolving that removed package from a mirror that still hosts it; execution installs a persistent remote-control script and steals browser cookies and account credentials.
