Pre-boot code execution via unchecked init configuration
Published Aug 8, 2024 · Updated Mar 13, 2025
Improper validation in Diebold Nixdorf Vynamic Security Suite before 3.3.0 SR4 allows physically proximate attackers to execute commands. During PBA, the integrity check omits /etc/initab from its hard-coded SHA-256 index, so attacker-supplied init entries survive validation and run during the Linux boot phase. Exploitation requires physical disk access and permits pre-boot code execution before the encrypted Windows volume starts.
