CVE-2023-23944

Password disclosure via cleartext OAuth2 setup storage

Published Feb 6, 2023 · Updated Mar 10, 2025

Cleartext password storage in Nextcloud Mail before 2.2.2 allows attackers with database access to read user passwords during OAuth2 setup. AccountForm submitted IMAP and SMTP password fields for XOAUTH2 accounts, and SetupService persisted them instead of leaving them empty until an access token arrived. Database access during the incomplete setup window is required, and the reported consequence is disclosure of the stored mail-account password.
