Local file exfiltration via unrestricted protocol paths
Published Aug 19, 2023 · Updated Oct 7, 2024
Path traversal in Typora before 1.6.7 on Windows and Linux allows attackers to read and exfiltrate local files through crafted content. The typora:// file-protocol handler in resources/app.asar/atom.js passes attacker-supplied absolute paths through getRealPath and returns the referenced file to an embedded webpage. Exploitation requires a user to open a malicious Markdown file or paste attacker-controlled content into Typora; exposed files can then be sent to a remote web server.
