Code execution via malformed JSON object key
Published Feb 3, 2023 · Updated Mar 26, 2025
Heap out-of-bounds access in Barenboim json-parser 1.1.0 and earlier allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed JSON. The json_value_parse path scans an unterminated object key past the input buffer, and AddressSanitizer records a one-byte heap read at json_parser.c line 685. Reachability requires a consuming application to pass attacker-controlled JSON to the library; the published reproducer demonstrates the out-of-bounds read but not code execution.
