SYSTEM privilege escalation via writable DLL directory
Published Jan 11, 2023 · Updated Apr 7, 2025
Privilege escalation in Shibboleth Service Provider before 3.4.1 allows local users to execute planted DLLs as SYSTEM on Windows. The pre-3.4.1 Windows installer leaves the service executable's installation directory writable, so the SYSTEM service loads attacker-supplied DLLs placed beside it. Exploitation requires local write access to that folder and service execution; the vendor disputes the report's significance and describes the ACLs as best effort.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
