Cross-site scripting via attribute-context widget replacement
Published Jan 10, 2023 · Updated Apr 7, 2025
Cross-site scripting in the MediaWiki Widgets extension allows remote attackers to execute JavaScript through crafted widget markup. WidgetRenderer substitutes rendered widget output for a marker after MediaWiki has sanitized the surrounding HTML, including markers inside attribute values. An attacker must be able to place a widget invocation on a page, and code runs in a visitor's browser when the affected attribute is activated, such as by hovering.
