Stored XSS via unescaped time-precision messages
Published Jan 20, 2023 · Updated Apr 3, 2025
Stored XSS in the Wikibase extension for MediaWiki allows remote authenticated users to execute JavaScript in visitors' browsers. HtmlTimeFormatter treats plain text from MwTimeIsoFormatter as HTML, allowing edited wikibase-time-precision messages to enter rendered pages and API output without escaping. The flaw affects MediaWiki before 1.35.9, 1.36.x through 1.38.x before 1.38.5, and 1.39.x before 1.39.1; exploitation requires editinterface access and a viewer to render the result.
