CVE-2023-22743

Elevated code execution via adjacent comctl32.dll side-loading

Published Feb 14, 2023 · Updated Mar 10, 2025

DLL side-loading in the Git for Windows installer before 2.39.2 allows local users to execute code through a crafted comctl32.dll. The installer manifest requests comctl32.dll version 6 and permits a search in an adjacent installer-name.exe.Local tree, loading an attacker-controlled copy. Exploitation requires local write access and installer execution from that directory; an elevated automated upgrade runs the payload with elevated privileges.
