Service slowdown via unbounded topic draft data
Published Jan 26, 2023 · Updated Mar 10, 2025
Resource-exhaustion denial of service in Discourse before 3.0.1 stable allows remote authenticated users to slow the forum via a draft. The topic-draft endpoint accepts and stores draft data without a length limit, allowing one draft to consume excessive server resources. A forum account and user interaction are required; a sufficiently large draft forces the instance to crawl without exposing or altering data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=beta < 3.1.0.beta2
- Affected versionversion=stable < 3.0.1
