Privilege escalation via UEFI out-of-bounds write
Published Sep 16, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in Intel processor UEFI firmware allows local users with high privileges to escalate privileges through local access. Intel has not disclosed the affected UEFI component, the buffer written past its bounds, or the input that controls the write. Exploitation requires high privileges and local access; the resulting write can alter protected firmware state and interrupt firmware execution.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
