Data tampering and crashes via trusted symbolic links
Published Oct 17, 2023 · Updated Sep 13, 2024
Improper link handling in Oracle MySQL Installer before 1.6.8 allows local users to alter critical data or crash the installer. During MSI installation and server data-directory configuration, the installer trusts symbolic links in program-data paths instead of checking and removing them. Exploitation requires a low-privileged local logon and interaction by another person, and it can overwrite or delete accessible data or cause hangs and repeatable crashes.
