CVE-2023-21277

Cross-user image disclosure via unvisited themed-icon URIs

Published Aug 14, 2023 · Updated Oct 9, 2024

Information disclosure in Android 12, 12L, and 13 allows local users to read images belonging to other device users through RemoteViews. RemoteViews.java's visitUris method fails to visit URIs embedded in themed icons, so notification URI permission checks omit those image references. A user-level process can exploit the confused-deputy path without user interaction; the demonstrated consequence is cross-user image disclosure.
