Local privilege escalation via unsafe Intent reuse
Published Jun 15, 2023 · Updated Dec 18, 2024
Unsafe deserialization in Android 11, 12, 12L, and 13 allows local users to elevate privileges through account-management flows. Settings, Car Settings, and TV Settings pass an account authenticator's deserialized Intent directly to privileged activity-launch APIs instead of first copying it into a base Intent. A locally running low-privilege app can trigger the flow without user interaction and execute with elevated system authority.
