Local privilege escalation via kernel buffer overwrite
Published Mar 24, 2023 · Updated Feb 20, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in Android's bcm4389 kernel driver allows local users with System privileges to gain higher privileges without interaction. The dhd_prot_ioctcmplt_process function in dhd_msgbuf.c inadequately validates input and writes past a buffer boundary. Exploitation requires local System execution privileges and a device using the bcm4389 driver; the resulting memory corruption can raise the attacker's privilege level.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
