CVE-2023-20788

Local privilege escalation via thermal use-after-free

Published Aug 7, 2023 · Updated Oct 21, 2024

Privilege escalation in MediaTek thermal components on affected Android 12 chipsets allows local users to obtain elevated privileges. A time-of-check time-of-use race permits a thermal object to be freed while it remains in use, producing a use-after-free condition. Exploitation requires existing System execution privileges on the device but no user interaction; MediaTek has not disclosed the specific function or race trigger.
