Local privilege escalation via vdec race condition
Published Apr 6, 2023 · Updated Feb 12, 2025
Use-after-free in MediaTek vdec on Android 12.0 and 13.0 allows local users with System privileges to escalate privileges. Concurrent vdec operations can access a shared object after another operation frees it because synchronization does not close the race window. Exploitation requires local System-level execution on an affected MediaTek chipset and no user interaction; no narrower code locus is public.
