CVE-2023-1672Public exploit

Private-key disclosure via permissive pre-chmod file creation

Published Jul 11, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Information disclosure in Tang before 14 allows local users to read server private keys during key generation or rotation. The create_new_keys function and the tangd-keygen and tangd-rotate-keys helpers create JWK files as mode 0644 before changing them to 0440. Exploitation requires access to a broadly readable key directory and winning the short race; stolen keys can impersonate the server or unlock an acquired protected volume.
