CVE-2023-1192Network attack vector

Service interruption via premature CIFS response release

Published Nov 1, 2023 · Updated Feb 27, 2025

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel CIFS client allows remote authenticated users to interrupt service through crafted SMB responses. cifs_demultiplex_thread() wakes a synchronous waiter before marking its response safe, allowing the waiter to release a buffer that the CIFS thread still reads. The race requires an active CIFS connection and interruption of a synchronous request; the bounded consequence is CIFS disruption or denial of service.
