Command execution via unsafe Electron renderer configuration
Published Feb 24, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Code injection in Jithin Pariyarath Markdown-Electron allows context-dependent attackers to execute commands via a crafted Markdown file. The Electron renderer enables Node.js integration and renders dangerous Markdown operations without filtering, exposing Node APIs such as child_process. Opening the crafted file triggers an HTML event-handler payload without a click, while a JavaScript link requires a click; commands run with the application user's privileges.
