Utility crash via shifted-sample heap overwrite
Published Feb 13, 2023 · Updated Mar 21, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in LibTIFF tiffcrop 4.4.0 and earlier allows attackers to crash the utility with a crafted TIFF file. The extractContigSamplesShifted16bits routine writes a shifted 16-bit sample one byte beyond its allocated heap buffer while extracting crafted crop regions. Exploitation requires local invocation of tiffcrop with the malicious file and applicable region options, and the demonstrated consequence is process termination.
