Host file disclosure via raced export symlink
Published Mar 27, 2023 · Updated Feb 24, 2025
TOCTOU in Podman before 4.4.2 allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary host files during volume export. The volume-export path created a tar archive without chrooting to the volume, so a raced symlink could resolve outside the export source. Exploitation requires control of a container attached to the volume and an administrator or platform action that exports it, exposing the referenced host file through the resulting tarball.
