Cross-site scripting via untyped avatar responses
Published Feb 8, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
Cross-site scripting in Apache Answer before 1.0.4 allows remote authenticated users to execute script through crafted avatar content. AvatarThumb returns avatar bytes without assigning the response Content-Type from the file extension, so a browser interprets crafted content as active script. A registered user must supply the avatar content and another user must load it; execution occurs in the viewer's browser context.
