CVE-2023-0592

Arbitrary file write via unchecked extraction paths

Published Jan 31, 2023 · Updated Mar 27, 2025

Path traversal in sviehb Jefferson before 0.4.1 allows local users to write outside the extraction directory via a crafted JFFS2 image. The dump_fs routine joins untrusted directory-entry names into output paths without verifying that the resolved destination remains beneath the chosen extraction root. Exploitation requires a user or automated analysis pipeline to extract the malicious image, after which attacker-controlled content can overwrite files writable by the Jefferson process.
