CVE-2023-0414Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Application crash via freed certificate-name data

Published Jan 24, 2023 · Updated Apr 2, 2025

Use-after-free in Wireshark 4.0.0 through 4.0.2 allows attackers to crash the application through malformed EAP packet processing. During second-pass EAP dissection, dissect_x509af_SubjectName appends certificate-name text from an RDNSequence allocation that the first-pass reset already freed. Exploitation requires injected traffic reaching an active capture or a user opening a crafted capture file, and the demonstrated consequence is process termination.
