Unauthenticated kernel panic via NTLMv2 length underflow
Published Mar 27, 2023 · Updated Feb 19, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in ksmbd in Linux Kernel 6.2 RC4 allows remote attackers to trigger a kernel panic via an SMB request. ksmbd_decode_ntlmssp_auth_blob subtracts 16 from an undersized client-controlled NTLM response length and passes the negative result to a heap-copy operation. The ksmbd SMB port must be reachable and a valid username must be known, but no password is required; successful exploitation crashes the host.
