Local agent disablement via privileged cytool commands
Published Feb 8, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
Protection mechanism failure in Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR Agent 5.0 and 7.5 on Windows allows local users to disable or uninstall the agent. The agent's cytool protection mechanism accepts privileged disable and uninstall commands from a low-privileged local account. Local access is required, and successful exploitation interrupts endpoint protection without reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=5.0 <5.0.12.22203 changes=[{"at":"5.0.12.22203","status":"unaffected"}]
