LocalSystem code execution via unquoted service path
Published Jan 13, 2026 · Updated Jan 13, 2026
Unquoted service path handling in Cain & Abel 4.9.56 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with LocalSystem privileges. The Abel service registers C:\Program Files (x86)\Cain\Abel64.exe as an unquoted BINARY_PATH_NAME, causing Windows to search space-delimited path prefixes. A low-privileged local user with write access to a searched prefix gains LocalSystem execution when the automatic Abel service starts.
