CVE-2022-50762Public exploit

Kernel undefined behavior via malformed NTFS metadata

Published Dec 24, 2025 · Updated Dec 24, 2025

Shift-out-of-bounds in ntfs3 in affected Linux releases allows local users to trigger undefined behavior by mounting a crafted NTFS volume. The true_sectors_per_clst() helper subtracts an unsigned boot-sector byte before shifting, so values at or above 0xf4 become a negative shift count instead of a valid cluster-size exponent. Reachability requires the ntfs3 driver to parse attacker-controlled NTFS boot metadata during a mount; the published reproducer demonstrates the UBSAN fault, but no broader security consequence is documented.
