Kernel warning via inode-eviction race
Published Dec 24, 2025 · Updated Dec 24, 2025
A race in ext4 inode eviction in affected Linux kernel builds allows local users to trigger a spurious WARN_ON_ONCE message. The ext4_evict_inode() check treats an inode re-dirtied by an unwritten-extent conversion worker as inconsistent even though eviction waits for conversion to finish. Reaching the warning requires dioread_nolock, newly allocated dirty blocks, and a race between unlink-driven eviction and extent conversion; the kernel record states that no inode use-after-free occurs.
