Local privilege escalation via unquoted updater path
Published Jan 13, 2026 · Updated Jan 13, 2026
Unquoted service path in Splashtop 8.71.12001.0 and earlier allows local users to execute code with SYSTEM privileges. The SSUService registration starts SSUService.exe from an unquoted path beneath C:\Program Files (x86)\Splashtop\Splashtop Software Updater, allowing Windows to resolve an attacker-planted executable before the intended binary. Exploitation requires local access and permission to write into a searched path segment; service startup then runs the planted code as LocalSystem.
