Kernel privilege escalation via callback reference undertracking
Published Dec 9, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel BPF verifier allows local users to gain kernel privileges through a crafted eBPF program. The verifier models each synchronous for-each callback once, so it undertracks caller references that runtime iterations release repeatedly, causing refcount underflow and use-after-free. Loading the program requires CAP_BPF or equivalent rights; successful exploitation enables kernel memory disclosure, arbitrary writes, control-flow hijacking, or a kernel panic.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
