Kernel crash via unmapped port I/O access
Published Dec 9, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
A RISC-V Linux kernel port I/O flaw allows local users with parallel-port access to crash the kernel by writing to a PCIe device. The insb, outsb, and related wrapper macros dereference a physical PCI port address instead of adding PCI_IOBASE to reach its memory mapping. Exploitation requires RISC-V hardware, an affected kernel, a PCIe parallel port, and permission to access the port; the resulting invalid access produces a kernel memory fault.
