CVE-2022-50553Public exploit

Kernel crash via oversized synthetic trace event

Published Oct 7, 2025 · Updated Oct 7, 2025

Out-of-bounds write in Linux kernel trace actions allows local users to crash affected systems through a synthetic event with over 16 parameters. trace_action_create() stores an index for every parameter in the 16-entry action_data.var_ref_idx array, so excess entries overwrite match_data.event. The attack requires local access and permission to write tracefs event and trigger controls; the demonstrated consequence is a kernel panic.
