Kernel crash via stale ext4 inline-data state

Denial of service in ext4 in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel through a direct-I/O, truncate, and buffered-write sequence. An ext4 direct-I/O write leaves EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA set, so a later truncate and buffered write allocates inline data beside normal blocks. Local write access to an ext4 file is required, and reaching ext4_writepages can trigger a kernel BUG that interrupts the host.
