CVE-2022-50262

System crash via unchecked NTFS record-size shift

Published Sep 15, 2025 · Updated Sep 15, 2025

NULL-pointer dereference in Linux kernel NTFS3 5.15 through 6.1.2 allows local users to crash the system by mounting a malformed NTFS image. The NTFS3 mount path treats a negative BOOT record_size as a shift value without validating the result, while blksize_bits() assumes a size above 256 and the resulting record_bits calculation reaches a NULL dereference. Reachability requires the crafted image to enter the NTFS3 mount path; the documented consequence is availability loss without data disclosure or modification.
