Local service hang via device-probe deadlock
Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in Linux kernel hibernation handling allows local users to hang snapshot device access via USB gadget emulation. snapshot_open() calls wait_for_device_probe() while holding misc_mtx; an unresponsive raw-gadget probe then waits on code blocked by that mutex. A local process must emulate a USB device and stall its response, after which snapshot access can sleep indefinitely.
